چکیده
This paper presents a validation study for non-rigid registration of 3D contrast enhanced magnetic resonance mammography images. We compare the performance of two non-rigid registration algorithms based on singleand multilevel free-form deformations using B-splines and normalized mutual information. To assess the registration performance, we employ a biomechanical deformation simulator of patient motion likely to occur in vivo.

Nonrigid registration algorithm for longitudinal breast MR images and the preliminary analysis of breast tumor response
Although useful for the detection of breast cancers, conventional imaging methods, including mammography and ultrasonography, do not provide adequate information regarding response to therapy. Dynamic contrast enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) has emerged as a promising technique to provide relevant information on tumor status. Consequently, accurate longitudinal registration of breast MR images is critic...

In this paper, we present an evaluation study of a set of registration strategies for the alignment of sequences of 3D dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance breast images. The accuracy of the optimal registration strategies was determined on unseen data. The evaluation is based on the simulation of physically plausible breast deformations using finite element methods and on contrast-enha...
متن کاملFinite-element method for intermodality nonrigid breast registration using external skin markers
We are developing a method using nonrigid co-registration of PET and MR breast images as a way to improve diagnostic specificity in difficult-to-interpret mammograms, and ultimately to avoid biopsy. A deformable breast model based on a finite-element method (FEM) has been employed. The FEM “loads” are taken as the observed intermodality displacements of several fiducial skin markers placed on t...
متن کاملPredicting Tumour Location by Simulating Large Deformations of the Breast Using a 3D Finite Element Model and Nonlinear Elasticity
Two of the major imaging modalities used to detect and monitor breast cancer are (contrast enhanced) magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and mammography. Image fusion, including accurate registration between MR images and mammograms, or between CC and MLO mammograms, is increasingly key to patient management (for example in the multidisciplinary meeting), but registration is extremely difficult bec...
متن کاملNonrigid Medical Image Registration by Finite-Element Deformable Sheet-Curve Models
Image-based change quantitation has been recognized as a promising tool for accurate assessment of tumor's early response to chemoprevention in cancer research. For example, various changes on breast density and vascularity in glandular tissue are the indicators of early response to treatment. Accurate extraction of glandular tissue from pre- and postcontrast magnetic resonance (MR) images requ...
